Dr. Craig Kent

K. Craig Kent, MD, is chief executive officer of UVA Health and executive vice president for health affairs at the University of Virginia. A renowned vascular surgeon, he now oversees an integrated health system that includes a world-class academic medical center and Virginia’s No. 1 pediatric hospital. Since Dr. Kent joined UVA in 2020, the health system has grown to a $4 billion operation with a presence throughout the state.

Dr. Kent previously served as dean of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, vice president for health sciences, and the Leslie H. and Abigail S. Wexner Dean’s Chair in Medicine. Before Ohio State, Dr. Kent served as chair of the Department of Surgery at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health and was chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Columbia College of Physician Surgeons.

Dr. Kent is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and former chair of the American Board of Surgery. An NIH-funded researcher for 30 years, he maintains a vascular nanotechnology lab at UVA. Dr. Kent has authored more than 325 articles and 65 book chapters, served on multiple medical journals editorial boards, and lectured nationally and internationally.

Dr. Kent grew up on the family’s cattle ranch in Nevada. He attended the University of Nevada-Reno and then the University of California, San Francisco, where he completed medical school and his surgical residency. Dr. Kent then finished a prestigious research and clinical fellowship in vascular surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Kent and his wife, Marjorie, live in Charlottesville, Virginia, and have five children. They enjoy traveling, attending college basketball games, hiking, playing golf, cycling, gardening, and tennis.
